Living in paradise is all very well, but sometimes the rugged landscape that I love seems set to try me.
Currently we have an issue with the road - State Highway 6. This is the road that goes down the West Coast and it is the only road available if you are driving from say, Hari Hari to Queenstown, like most tourists do. The issue is that this is really rough terrain and right now there is a big slip at Haast Pass. Every time it rains the road gets blocked by giant rocks. Since we are in the middle of our wet season (and it rains a lot in Haast in any season) the road is closed more than it is open.
A closed road encourages no tourists. Up and down the West Coast businesses are very quiet, right at what is normally the start of our busy summer season. Coming hard on the heels of the earlier road closure this year (see my blog about the missing bridge) it is pretty hard news to take. Scarily this slip is massive and the location makes it very hard to fix - the road is likely to be closed periodically for months. News like this could get a girl seriously annoyed, but I can't do anything about the road so I am enjoying the additional quiet time and hoping for endless weeks of sunshine soon!
If you are planning to drive around the South Island don't be too discouraged - the road opens whenever possible. Be aware that you could be delayed around Haast Pass for a day or two, and if the road is closed you get the opportunity to get out and explore a bit more of our little corner of paradise.
In early 2012 Penny & Nairn moved from central Wellington to South Westland. Welcome to the record of their adventures.
